Egg Donation Program in Portugal

At IVI, donor selection is a rigorous, multi-stage process involving different teams: doctors, nurses, psychologists, and laboratory staff. In the first stage, an information session is held in which we explain the donation process and review personal and family medical history. The donor’s lifestyle, life stage, motivation for donation and capacity for commitment are also assessed by our psychology team.

Finally, a gynaecological examination, blood tests, and genetic studies are carried out.

During fertility treatment, the recipient receives only non-identifying information, such as general physical characteristics or medical history, thus ensuring privacy and protection. The medical, psychology, and laboratory teams are always available to listen to any concerns and answer questions.

The eggs come from women with no relation to the recipient, who decide to donate voluntarily and altruistically. As explained, all candidates are carefully evaluated according to the criteria set by both CNPMA and IVI: they must be between 18 and 34 years old, be in good health, and have no personal or family history of genetic or hereditary diseases.

Donor information is stored in official records for 75 years, ensuring traceability, safety, and legal compliance at every stage of the process. Each donor may undergo a maximum of four donations, with a minimum interval of three months between them, thereby ensuring strict control of the procedure.
