People who have fertility problems and are considering treatment have long been used to the idea that they are facing a long and complicated course of procedures. The expectation is that when you go to a fertility clinic, eggs and sperm are tested among lots of other processes, at the end of which the outcome is still uncertain. But what if there was a guarantee? Guarantees operate in other walks of life, why not in a fertility clinic? That’s just what we have come up with at IVI fertility clinics. In this article we explain the benefits of the IVI Baby plan, how the guarantee works and who is eligible for inclusion.
Read on to find out more and judge for yourself whether this is the way forward for you in your fertility journey. And speaking of journeys, this plan may not be available in a fertility clinic near you, as we only offer it in our Spanish clinics. We’ll explain why.
What are the benefits of the IVI Baby plan?
In simple terms, the IVI Baby plan offers you an assurance right at the outset of your fertility treatment, by guaranteeing that you will achieve your aim of having a baby or you will get your money back. It sounds like a novel concept, and it is. It probably goes against all your expectations around fertility clinics and the treatments they offer, but this plan takes a whole new approach. It guarantees that you will become a parent within 24 months of the start of treatment. The benefits, apart from reducing the emotional and financial risk to you, are enormous in terms of boosting your confidence, your outlook, wellbeing and overall peace of mind.
How does the guarantee work?
The guarantee is straightforward. Once you are accepted on to the programme, all the money that you have paid, minus direct expenses of some treatments such as surgery or similar, will be refunded if treatment is unsuccessful. There’s no catch, but naturally we need to be confident that we can make good on our assurance to you. Therefore, in order to be eligible for the programme, we have criteria based on our long experience of expected outcomes for different individuals.
Who is eligible for inclusion in the IVI Baby plan?
There are three categories of infertility treatments which come within the IVI Baby plan. These are IVI Baby IVF, IVI Baby IVF Genetic and IVI Baby OVODON. Each has its own different criteria for inclusion and is intended for different groups of people.
IVI Baby IVF
This treatment plan involves the use of ‘regular’ IVF and is aimed at women under 38 years old who are undergoing IVF treatment for the first time. Patients need to have a level of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) above 1.5 ng/ ml and 11 or more antral follicles in total. Some medical conditions prevent inclusion in the programme. These include:
- A BMI of over 30
- Severe male factor infertility
- Some uterine pathologies and abnormalities of anatomy, identified by a 3D ultrasound scan
- A history of pelvic radiotherapy
- A history of recurring gestational loss where there is no identifiable cause or from an untreatable known cause. These cases could be eligible for the programme which includes preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), subject to medical evaluation.
IVI Baby IVF Genetic
This is IVF with genetic testing. It is intended for patients under 40 who have medical indications for the use of Preimplantation Genetic Testing for aneuploidy (IVF + PGT-A), who also have an AMH level greater than 1.5 ng/ ml and an antral follicle count of 11 or more. Conditions which would rule out participation in this programme include:
- A BMI of over 30
- Severe male factor infertility
- Some uterine pathologies including anatomical abnormalities
- An indication of the need for PGT due to monogenic or chromosomal disease.
- A history of recurrent gestational loss following the transfer of euploid embryos with no identifying cause, or with an identified cause where no specific treatment is possible.
IVI Baby – OVODON
The OVODON programme uses IVF with donated eggs. It is for women younger than 48 years old, with a medical indication of egg donation. As with the other two categories, there are certain exclusions:
- A BMI of over 30
- Severe male factor infertility
- Some uterine pathologies and anatomical abnormalities
- Gonadal dysgenesis
- History of pelvic radiotherapy
- Indication of PGT as a result of monogenic or chromosomal disease
- Recurrent gestational loss following embryo transfer with egg donation.
None of the above lists of exclusions are exhaustive, and you can see a more complete list on our website. However, every patient is different and exclusions could arise from other medical conditions on a case-by-case basis on the advice of your IVI fertility specialist. In addition, you should be aware that in all of these programmes, there is a possibility that certain medical conditions could arise which would lead to subsequent exclusion. Examples include cases where endometrial disorders arise following the initial stimulation, or an absence of any euploid embryos after the first treatment.
What if I am not eligible?
For those patients who are unable to be included on any IVI Baby Plan, we will still offer our efforts, technology and expertise towards achieving your dream of pregnancy as we do in the normal way for all our patients. In this context, it’s worth remembering that 9 out of 10 couples who undergo a fertility treatment with us do go on to fulfil their objective of becoming parents, so even though you are not in one of the guaranteed programmes, the odds are still in your favour.
Why is the plan only available in IVI clinics in Spain?
Since IVI was first established in Spain in 1990, we now have clinics all over the world but nevertheless we have worked since those early days to gear up our clinics in Spain to an international patient base. We can offer multilingual staff and English-speaking doctors of international standing as well as practical conveniences such as an airport pickup service, video consultations and counselling, with a personal medical assistant who will accompany you through the whole process. In addition, we operate in a legislative framework that guarantees donor anonymity, we have one of the most comprehensive egg banks in the world, and there’s no waiting list.
